hello everyone, I was hoping someone maybe able to help me with this issue. I have 2 computers (laptop and a desktop running windows XP) that needs to be networked togeather. The problem is my friend wants me to use only two NICs and a crossover cable (direct connection). The only way I have setup a network is using a router or a hub. What are the steps need to setup this up to work under windows XP Please help.

Make sure both PC's are in the same WORKGROUP and share out your hard drives. Connect the cable and reboot. Try this I hope it helps.

I agree with Techy, but one other thing that you could try is to set the line speed for each of your nics down to 10 Mbps, instead of 100 Mbps. Sometimes there are transmission failures and packet loss when you dont switch down to 10. It sounds incorrect, but it works. I have found this true, ONLY with a crossover cable connection/network.

Just go into device manager under the hardware tab in my computer properties. Then double click your Nic to open up the properties of that, then go to the Advanced tab and select Line Speed, Link Speek and Duplex, etc. (depends on what Nic you have) then unselect auto from the drop down menu and select 10 Mbps Full Duplex. Then give that a try.

I always reboot my computers (not necessary), but it seems to cure about 80% of the problems I have ever ran into.

I hope this works if Techy's idea didn't. Good Luck!
