I have two machines; Win98se and WinXP. The XP machine uses a multiboot (Win98se and WinXP) setup. When both machines are running Win98se, my LinkSys network, which is not connected to the Internet, works exactly as it should; that is, file and printer sharing are quick and easy. What I want to do is to set up a LAN using the WinXP machine and the other Win98se machine ... this LAN not to be connected to the Internet.

I thought I'd done everything right, but after several tries I have to admit that I need help in setting up this LAN.

Thanks.

Did you run the Xp Network Setup Wizard and then create the disk you run on all other computers so they will connect to the internet?

Yes, I created and ran the disk on the other (Win98se) machine, and in fact did all the required steps except the ones I don't know about. It seems incredible that nearly everyone seems to think that a LAN should be connected to the Internet. In my situation, each machine has its own, direct connection to the Internet and I don't want/need the LAN to connect to the Internet. I only want to share files and folders between the two machines on the LAN.

I have 3 machines networked (XP, ME, & 98) using the Compaq IPAQ phone line adapters. I use tcp/ip as the protocol with static private ip numbers. I set the Xp to 192.168.0.1, the ME to 0.2 and the 98 to 0.3 and set all the default gateways to 192.168.0.1. They all network fine. You might check the numbers that the computers are using by going to start, run and typing winipcfg for bothe the 98 systems. On the XP machine you will have to go to the comand prompt and type ipconfig. Also they should all be part of the same workgroup. Check the identification tab in network on the 98's and the wiazrd lets you type in your workgroup on the Xp machine. Good luck!!
