Hi, I'm setting up a windows 2000 server for about 5 comps at my house. I have had problems and have a couple of ?'s. First the purpose of my server will be to be a domain, so people can login on every computer with teh same u/p and get the same rights. It will also serve as a ftp and maybe an http server. I have recently signed up with dyndns.org and got a domain whcich is in the format "xxxxxx.gotdns.com". Should i make my domain on the server setup be the "xxxxx.gotdns.com" or should i just make up a name like "server". Does the name matter? I want to know what should my domain name be and does it really matter. Thanks very much in advance.

Well best practice if you have lets say a registerd domain name then you could name your server as per that domain name ! It would be a true dns server ........ for your purpose If per say you didnt have a registerd domain name and you put a domain name out there linked to the web everytime dns looks for updates you might run into some truoble after having people with your doamin name that you have done on the fly calling you up saying that you are making request to their machine ! If you are going to use ISS and FTP services as well you might be putting to much of a load on that one server ! Something to think about Anthony Cabanas

The name of your home domain server does not matter. The gotdns.com DNS server will map XXXX.gotdns.com to your ip address that your ISP gave you. When or if your ip address changes you will have to let gotdns.com know so they can update the DNS database. You will also have to set the DNS entries in your server to look at itself for updates. I think this is done by default though not for sure. I do agree with LiNetTech though that it would be in best practice to name your server the domain name xxxx.gotdns.com

This is done automatically with the login authentification. I would set up roaming profiles so that the user can set up an their own enviroment to their liking. background pic,themes etc..This will follow them from pc to pc. Keep in mind though the larger the profile the longer time it takes to long on. Also I havent figured out how to make roaming profiles work on 98 yet. But will work on w2k and xp.

This can all be managed in IIS manager. Just make sure that your server can handle the load.

Are you doing this over cable or dsl?
