Setting User Preferences with a cookie?

Hello-

I am trying to add a feature to my websites which will allow usrs to create an area which will store their prefered areas of the website.
For example, if a user only went to my site for a specific area or page, I can gather this data and allow the user to jump to those paages from the front door. (much like the personalization option created by Yahoo!)


I know this can be done with ASP, however I would like to avoid that bag of headaches. An advice on this would be fantastic.
