We are using a Checkpoint firewall and have recently installed MS Exchange 5.5. I am trying to set up an Outlook client to access the Exchange server through vpn. Is this possible? What do I need to do to on the Exchange server to achieve this? This is a managed firewall so I wouldn't be the one to adjust or create a rule if that is what's necessary. The clients would be utilizing some version of Outlook. I have VPN'd successfully to other resources within the LAN. Any help is greatly appreciated!

HI.

* Create a HOSTS files on the client machine that will map the Exchange server name to the Exchange server internal ip address.
This should handle name resolution issues.

* You will also need to deal with bandwidth issues.
There are several solutions to this, here are some:

Use outlook in offline mode, and only synchronize with the server, do not "connect" to it.

Use OWA instead of Outlook.

Use IMAP protocol. (Good for email, not for calendar).

Implement a terminal server beside the Exchange server.

With any solution, you'll need to insturct the users to keep folders like Inbox, Sent items, Deleted Items clean and not full with 9999 items.

Bye
