Hi All,
This may seem a silly question but how do you set-up the console on AIX 4.2. I have used the command which shows me the device the console is on /dev/lft0 (which I presume is the screen that came with it, but do you need to be logged into a special user or something as I don't seem to be getting any messages?

Also when the console has been setup is it possible to route it to a PC running Exceed?

Hoping someone has the answer....

Thought I'd scan back thru some older postings and see if I missed anything, so I don't know if you still need this help or not.

First of all:
No Unix questions are silly. I have a training document from IBM that quotes "Unix is like an onion, the more layers you peel off, the more you want to cry."

On setting up the console. You go through smitty > System Environments > Assign the Console . You can use the chcons command, I just prefer smitty. You do have to reboot for it to take affect.

On getting messages across the console. You may look at your syslogd setup. Check the /etc/syslog.conf file for specifics on messages and where they are going. I wish I could tell you more, but I am looking at the syslogd myself right now.

On getting you console through Exceed. If you are asking if you can get a CDE login through Exceed, Yes you can. It won't be you "console", but you can get the CDE. Here's the steps:
1. In your Hummingbird Exceed folder, find Xconfig.
2. Open Communication.
3. For XDMCP-broadcast, click on Configure.
4. Under the XDMCP Broadcast section, make sure the Host File List is checked and the file name is xdmcp.text, then click on Edit.
5. Add your Unix servers hostnames to this list.
6. The next time you start Exceed, you'll open up with a list of hostnames to choose from. You pick the one you want and a CDE will start.
