We are reorganizing our server structure at our company. We have 2 new servers. One will be the primary domain controller for the company and the other will be used exclusivly for email (exchange server 5.5). Originally we had been logging onto the email server and setting up trust relationship to the other server so users could access their files. Now we want to have the primary server authenticate logons and be able to access email on the email server. I am having a problem setting this up in a test environment. We can log on to the primary server but I keep getting the message that I do not have permission to access my mail box on the email server. I set up a one way trust. with the primary server "trusting" the email server and the primary server "trusted" on the email server. Is this correct and is there anything else I need to do? X-)

Why is the email server on a different Domain?

That is the way I was told to set it up by management. Will this cause problems?

Dunno. Maybe not.

But it would seeem less complicated if it was on the same domain as the PDC. You wouldnt have to deal with trust relationships.

There is no advantage to having your email server on a different domain. None. You are much better having it on the same domain.

If they have a reason, post it here. I would like to know what it is. For sure you don't want Exchange on the same server as your PDC.

The only thing I can think of is that meant trusted v untrusted on a firewall, but that's a stretch.

Good Luck.

If you make another domain for the mail server, does this means that the pdc of this domain will also run the exchange server? The load will be to heavy. S. van Els

Thank you all. You gave me good information. I suggested putting the email server on the same domain to begin with. I will bring this info to the "decision makers". Thanks again. :->
