Here is my setup at home.

Cable modem
Linksys router
win98se workstations (3)
win98se used as file server

I would like to add the ability to use the present server ( yes I use the term loosely) as an FTP box connected on the internet. I have need to move a few large files from time to time.

I am not looking to setup anything long term or for large volume, just the once in a while thing.

The first question would be is this possible?
And if yes, please point me in the right direction.

As always we thank you for your support

If you want it quick, easy and stable, I'd recommend using WarFTPD.

ftp://ftp.jgaa.com/pub/products/Windows/WarFtpDaemon/1.6_Series/ward165.exe

Best of all its free for personal use.

Good luck!

Do you need advice on which software to use? how to get through the firewall? security issues?

You should be able to just fire up any 'ol free ftp server, change the port to something high up like 20000ish or something so it's a 'little' less obvious (not necessary, but I'd recommend it), and then configure your router to pass anything arriving on that port to the 'server'.
I'm assuming you need a little more detail than that however, if so, just let us know.
Plus I'm not positive if it's that simple or not, I've never actually ran ftp through a firewall, I know it's not simple on the client end, but I think the server just needs the one port (I could very well be wrong)

Well,
I have some experience with Unix, however almost none with Win products.
So Yes i need help on the software to use.
How it should be configured.
Any issues with the linksys router.
I will take any pointers and attempt to set one up over the next week.
I can then report back to this thread if I get stuck?
Again I do not want anything complex as this is for a small seldom used project, however it will be used for large files.
I concidered just using Kazaa and setting up my server with Kazaa as a way to move these files. I am not sure if that is very effiecent or private for that matter.

Well any help is great.

As always we thank you for your support
