Setting up AIX to send Emails to an MS Exchange Server 1

Hello Fellow AIX'ers,

I am new to AIX and I wish to know what information I need, plus what I need to do in order to set-up the system so I can send Emails to a Microsoft Exchange Server.

I dont do much in this area but running aix sending mail to exchange ...
0. IP routing is ok !
1. setup at exchange :
dont know what, I dont do exchange
2. setup at AIX
Im using sendmail which is controlled through sendmail.cf.
only change that I need is

3. restart sendmail
use smit or shcek sendmail.pid
conklusion :
every mail Im sending to me.where.are.you is forwarded.
This looks damm easy, but works here !
If U get problems I can't help, I havent had anything to troubleshoot, sorry. But I think a quick and dirty is worth the try.

With your help and delving into the the Unix manuals I have been able to successfully set my unix system to send Emails.
Not without a few hiccups.....but hey that's what being a techy is all about....

Sure can.

The only step I took to setup my AIX RS6000 box in order to only send Email to the MS Echange server was to configure TCP/IP using SMIT to include IP address, domain name and default gateway address of the DNS server.

I obtained some of this information by using ipconfig /all on my PC (using NT) but would not recommend this as you should request this information from your networking people.

That was all I did. I should point out that this only allows me to send mail out from AIX to the MS Exchange Server and even out using the MS Exchange internet connection, it does not allow me to receive mail ( only wanted to send email to notify me when at home or work of problems), plus this will probably only work if you are using a DNS Server!!!

This is true, but you can also reply to the email by clicking REPLY if you're using outlook. I am still investigating how am I going to send email from outlook by just knowing the email address of somebody (creating NEW message in outlook).

Hi Johnny2001,
The REPLY does not work for me. In order to reply to email from the AIX system it probably needs to be defined to the DNS server so it can resolve the AIX hostname.

YES! that's true... you have to define your system in the DNS server for you to receive e-mail (thru Internet).

using smit, check the following:

* check your hostname
* it's IP address
* provide/define the NameServer (Internet add & domain name)
* default gateway

finally, make sure that inside your DNS server, you define the domain name for your system

I am interested to reply in MS Exchange to e-mails issued from an AIX box. The reply generates an error e-mail in MS Exchange and too an error e-mail in AIX .
