I have a problem with a client. They had a contractor that took their software. He deleted all of the cab files and the I 386 folder and screwed up the security settings so it's really hard to make any changes. They don't need any security so we don't need to worry about domains. A workgroup would be fine. The security settings are so screwed up that I cannot share anything. Any ideas on how to override the security or reset it? I'm really screwed on this one. I don't know if it will be possible to not format and start over. Thanks, Daren

Bit more description would be helpful - how many machines, running what. How are security settings screwed up (and how was system set up originally). Don't really understand how having software stolen should change the way network will be set up.

The resource kit has a tool called "poledit.exe" which will allow you to reconfigure your policys. All systems must have a fat 32 partition as the primary in the NT4 environment. If there are win2k systems formated with the new NTFS they will not play well with your NT4 workgroup.
Hope this helps some.
You might also try to copy the cabs(i386) directory back to the system and run winnt.exe from the i386 dir which will run you through the setup again. I believe it prompts you for the option of repairing or installing to a different directory. This is helpful if you have data worth saving and want to get at it for backup. Don't select installing to another dir if you want to avoid installing your aps over.
