I am very new to Win 2000 Server. I have an older scuzzy drive on the server now that has 3 partitions (C,D,E) and a network drive (G). I am putting in a computer with a much larger IDE drive and need to create identical drives (just larger). How do I go about creating a network drive on the new hard drive?

All you need to do is to partition the drive and then to share them.

Give each share the appropriate user permission and your good to go.

Just open up windows explorer, and under tools choose map network drive. Select the G and browse to the same location as the old scuzzy. Just curious. Are you running the old scuzzy server as a dc where you might want to create the new server as another dc where they can sync? Good luck and let us know how it works out.

BUt how do you partition a 40 gig hard drive into 3 partitions and a network drive?

GlenJohnson, I am not sure what a "dc" is. What I am doing is taking an old server with a SCSI format and a small SCSI HD (about 6 gig) and putting in it's place a new system with a 40 gig IDE HD. BUt I need to transfer all the data from the SCSI drive into identically lettered partitions on the new IDE drive (I understand the parttitions will be larger on the new IDE drive). THere are applications that save data from different workstations to the server. These workstations have mapped drives to certain partitions on the old SCSI server. I want to put the data from the partitions on the old SCSI drive into respectively lettered partitions on the new IDE drive and not have to go to all of the workstations to make any changes. So how do I partition a 40 gig hard drive into 4 partitions so I can do this?

When you bring up the new server, do not use the entire 40 gigs for the install. Use say 10 gigs, then once the OS is up and running go the the disk manager. You will see the remaining 30 gigs available to make partitions (volumes). Simply click on the unused space and create a simple volume and size it to what you want, repeat this process for the two remaining volumes you want. You can assign drive letters at the time of creation. To make them network shares (drives) for your users. In explorer right click the appropriate drive you created and go the sharing tab, assign it the same value as your old SCSI drive shares. Restore the data from a valid backup off the old system and double check both file and sharing permissions.

I am in Server 2000, but do not see "disk Manager"? Can you point me to disk manager.

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Managment. Expand the modules... (quick goto: right click my computer, go to manage)
