Setting up a home network

A friend called me over to see if I could get his two computers to talk to each other. Both are xp. (Guessing xp home, not pro.) First thing I did was inpconfig /all and on both machines found 169.254.x.x. Told him this was not going to work. Doesn't have a router, just a cross over cable between the two. He told me he didn't want to spend a bunch of money on things like routers, and he connects both machines to the internet via dial-up. He only wants to print files from one computer on the printer hooked up to the other computer in the back room. I took the back computer, gave it a fixed ip of 192.16.10.1, with the same gateway, and a subnet of 255.255.255.0. I gave the computer out in the front room and gave it 192.16.10.2. Now the computer in back can see the one in the front, and we can open files on the computer in front, and can print pages on the printer in back. However, when we take the computer in front, and try and connect to the computer in back, it asks us to sign on as guest, which has been disabled on both. Ideas? Everything has been shared, and we even turned off all firewalls. We can see everything, just not log onto the back computer from the front.
