Setting up a domain

I am currently setting up a new server and need help. I am installing Windows NT Server 4.0 along with Microsoft BackOffice Server 4.5

I need to obviously create a domain name for the server so that I can add workstations to that domain on the network. My problem is, how do you create a domain?? Any help would be much appreciated.

respect for starting with an NT4 at this day and age.

you need to make your server a PDC, this will create your domain.

shame you don't have 2000/2003, it a lot nicer to use and less stuffy than NT

I know tell me about it, we're already running one server with NT 4.0 and we are trying to mirror it so we can try maintenance work on it and if we mess up it won't effect any of the users, if that makes any sense!

I'm probably going to appear really dumb now but how do I make it PDC? I've never set up a server from scratch so am a bit of a rookie at this!!

i'm well versed in win2000/3, but i've never done that stuff in NT4 either!

if you have a PDC already, then it's a BDC you'll need,

before attacking howto's for the NT server, what else does it provide in terms of service to the users?

Are you sure you don't want to make a dummy server using something like ghost, so you have 2 copies? One to run as a Primary domain Controller, the second to experiment with, not connected to the network?

It turned out that you have to specify that the server is a PDC during installation of the OS. If you do not then there is no way of changing it from an ordinary server into a DNS. Therefore I simply wiped the H/D's and started from scratch this time specifying it as a PDC.
