I'm trying to get a DNS server going, its for my MCSE revision. I have followed all my course notes and its starting to frustrate me.

I can ping server1 from the server1 command prompt, no problem regardless of if the DNS is running or not. From the server I can ping a pc if DNS is running, so it seems as though DNS is operational.

I go to the PC, (win98) configured to use the DNS server under TCP/IP, DNS properties. I can ping the server using its IP addr, but not using its DNS name.

I have sniffer loaded on server, its seeing DNS requests, but ignoring them, its not replying at all.

If I use the simple test function on the DNS server properties sheet that also fails. I found a reference to this on the server resource kit, states that this occurs if the 1.0.0.127.in-arpa zone is not set. I think this is also incorrect, the DNS actually creates the 0.0.127.in-arpa zone.

This seemed so simple when I read up on it, but after installing it 3 time now its starting to bug me, can anyone suggest something to make this work?

Typical, 2 days working on this, so I post a message and then find the problem to be with firewall software loaded onto the server!!

However the simple test feature still fails, but DNS does now respond to external queries, so I'm pretty happy.
