I am toying with a groupware system ( that requires that register_globals is set to ON but I keep my WAMP/LAMP tinkering servers set to OFF.

Is there a way to allow certain directories to use registered global variables while the rest of the site remains turned OFF?

Yes, you can.

This page of the PHP manual states that register_globals has a changeability of "PHP_INI_PERDIR|PHP_INI_SYSTEM"

This page of the PHP manual decodes the chaneability above to mean that register_globals can be changes in php.ini, in httpd.conf or a .httaccess file with Apache, and in the Windows registry on Win32.
