hi!
i want to learn about the windows 2000 server.
i want to install it and run it as server at home.
i have 2 PCs networked.
i don't have IP address or Domain name....to run it as the web server.
i know very little about the server but i heard you can run it without IP address or domain name.
i have a my webpage to run and want to create server and manager it.
what do i do?
do i set up active directory, DNS, DHCP?
does this setup call, standalone server?
can you guide me to the light?
thanks

hi!
i want to install it and run it as server at home.
Easy enough
i have 2 PCs networked.
Do you want these computers to go through the server or not. And what services do you want them to get from it. Ie user logons, internet, ...etc.
i don't have IP address or Domain name....to run it as the web server.
You do have an ip address or you couldn't be on the internet right now :) A purchased domain name is only neccesary to have point to you. For an at home network you can use any domain name you want. Registered or not. You can even use the domain name microsoft.com
i know very little about the server but i heard you can run it without IP address or domain name.
IP address no. Domain name yes. Although to maximize the use and learning i would suggest that you setup a domain.
i have a my webpage to run and want to create server and manager it.
Which web server do you use. Apache, IIS, PWS? If you are going to be learning 2k server i suggest IIS. IT comes with it and is pretty intuitive.
what do i do?
Go to the library or bookstore with a few hours on your hand and read some books on it. Spend more hours at home messing around with it. If you screw it up, re-install.
do i set up active directory, DNS, DHCP?
All choices for you to make. I would suggest you do to learn. AD is important, DNS is needed, DCHP you really dont need but it's good to know how to set it up.
does this setup call, standalone server?
Huh?
can you guide me to the light?
Usually above your head but may differ with buildings and lighting conditions ;)
thanks
No Problem
