We have a compaq server which is only 1 year old. Three months ago it started locking up. CPU was up so far I couldn't even CTRL, ALT, DELETE. Turns out it wasn't frozen, but just so slow our users couldn't access any files, and when they tried it locked them up locally. It looks like it's services.exe causing the problem, because I run task manager all the time and I can sort by who is hogging the memory. I posted this once before and someone mentioned a memory leak. The powers that be, (People that get paid a lot more than I,) quickly shot that down. I've done a search for services.exe and w2k server, and there's multiple purposes. Can I shut off services.exe? Glen A. Johnson

Could be a service having trouble launching (or running). You could try stopping services and see if that helps. Is Services.exe taking 100% CPU?

You may be close. I've just been e-mailed that exe doesn't really cause the problems, it's the msi's that do. Pro told me to check for problems with installer. Launching or runnig would be in the realm of the installer. Thanks. (Exe's are not executables, they are programs that are called up by the installers, so exe's aren't running until called upon.) Two things.
1)We went for a long time with no problem, then one day, the server locked up 6 times. Somebody asked me what changed. I joked, the boss came back. Wasn't so funny. He uses Terminal Services, I use VNC. We're moving from Novell to W2K, and I use VNC to add new users. He was on vacation, and when he came back, he started adding users with TS. We turned TS off on the nasty server, and the problem was greatly reduces.
2)We resolved another part of it using process explorer, freeware which shows what thread is calling up services.exe. Ours was an old cad program. Updated it, put on the sp's, and problem solved. I have the server set to notify me if cpu go's over 80%, and I maybe get three hits a day for a millisecond. Somebody opening a large file no doubt. Glen A. Johnson

I have this exact problem. Services.exe is taking up 99% of the computer. Norton Auto protect is not starting up. Is this a virus?

Possibly, but you should find process explorer running. It's a free download and can be found on google. What's in your event log, and how is Norton set up in serviices. Glen A. Johnson

I don't know much about computers & windows only programming.

In the task manager, services.exe is taking up the whole cpu. I'm really not sure what ur asking.

There is a program called process explorer. It's free and can be found on Services.exe is not a executable, some other program that tries to start calls services.exe to start it. Process explorer allowed me to find out that a different exe was trying to start and that was what was calling services.exe. When I fixed the other program, the cpu problam went away. Glen A. Johnson
