Has anyone been able to find solutions for this one?
In Windows 2000 I have had a couple different instances where I start or stop a service, and the service status shows as either "starting" or "stopping."
Once it gets to this point, when you go to services and look at the service in question, under the "all tasks" option, there is no options available. You cannot start, stop, pause, ect.
I have tried using "kill.exe" to stop the service and/or processes involved with the service, but this does not fix the problem. I have to reboot to get the service working properly at this point.
In the event viewer I typically do not get any error for why the service is in "stopping" or "starting" mode, only an error for the problem that crashed the service.
I am typically able to fix whatever problem is assiciated with crashing the service, but my question is "does anyone know of a way to correct a service in stopping or starting mode?" Rebooting is not an option, and I will try just about anything at this point to avoid rebooting.
The services that hang in "stopping" or "starting" mode include Oracle instances, MSDTC, and Other oracle services.
Thx,
Raymond
