Probably really simple, it's been years since my last install.

Anyway, I put SQL 2000 on a new box. I can view the DBs, (Temp, Noethwind, Pubs) etc but when I open enterprise manager, I get the message "SQL Server (name) is not know to be running are you sure you wish to connect ?"

I say yes, and can access is it locally, but when I try to creat a new ODBC connection from a network machine, the server doesn't show in the list.

Not showing up in the list for ODBC creation may be a security enhancement. Is the new server Windows 2003? Since I never use the list, I don't know what would affect it.

Enterprise Manager is generally stupid. I like the way it will try to restart servers when you accidentally click on them by default.

Which version of SQL Server do you have (Service Pack level)?

If you aren't sure what version you have, you can run:

SELECT @@VERSION

or

SELECT ServerProperty('Edition'), ServerProperty('ProductVersion'), ServerProperty('ProductLevel')
