Server manager shows open files when there are none

On Windows NT 4.0 server in Server Manager, one user sometimes shows up as having multiple files open (I believe they are all excel files) when in fact he doesn't have any open at all. This prevents others from editing the files. Why would these files show up as open when they are not open? This is not consistent--sometimes it does this, sometimes not.

Any idea what causes this?

Thanks

Sometimes I have noticed that when some users close off there MS Office applications, there is still a proccess for that application runnign on that persons machine.

WHat you will need to check is on the users machine that is reported as having teh file open, if tehre is any processes that are still running (eg: excel.exe) without any application window open.

Try that and see.

Sometimes if a user uses the x in the upper right hand corner to close the progam, without first closing the file, instead of the file ->close, and then file ->exit command this will happen.

This will happen with other programs too if you use the x instead of file ->exit. It isn't consistent though.

Cheers.
