Server fails to reboot after critical updates installed

Has anyone seen issues where a server (2K3) fails to reboot correctly after critical updates have been applied?

The server reboots to a stage where it responds to pings but the OS is unresponsive. Resetting the server and rebooting again is then successful.

This is a little inconvenient when I'm installing updates remotely as I lose the ability to RDP to the server.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What were the updates?

I have had issues where MS updates have applied graphic driver updates or other 'needed' updates which have made the system unresponsive and even unbootable.

Is it possible to do roll-backs on the updates you've applied?

The updates are usually the critical ones not the driver updates or the other non critical ones.

The strange thing is that it's only on the first reboot that the OS does not come back up. Once this happens you power down the server and it comes back up normally. There is nothing in the event log to indicate a cause either.

This is not isolated to one server. It's most frustrating as most of my servers are remote and I lose the ability to RDP to the server until someone in the local office resets the server for me.

Not a stupid question at all!!

We use Dameware as well but this doesn't work either. It's like the network starts up so the server responds to a ping but no services start. So, RDP or Dameware cannot connect. If I get someone at the local office to turn on the monitor for this system the screen is black.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and hose it and rebuild.

Sightly less frustration!!

Sounds like the best plan, else everything could be firefighting this situation from now on.

I don't think I am anywhere near experienced to add anything useful to this, I just like to see if anyone answers anything else and I get to learn something new!

Is this every time you apply an update or has it happened when you have just rebooted?
