Hi,

I'm currently in a bit of strife. Yesterday, for no apparent reason, our SQL Server crashed - about 3 times in the space of 15 mins. Today, the server crashed again after having been up overnight - - right in cue with the scheduled execution of the SQL Agent job. Coincidence - maybe, but I'm suspicious!

I'm a relatively inexperienced DBA, and I was wondering if anybody else might have run into this before or have any suggestions for determining the cause behind my trouble.

I'm running:

SQL Server 2000 (sp4)
Win 2003 (sp1)
Reporting Services (sp2)

Thanks in advance!!!

Casey.

First off, check the SQL Server Logs(s) in Enterprise Manager under Management..SQL Server Logs.

Then check the job that seems to be firing off at that time. Right-click on the Job and choose View Job History. Once inside make sure to check the "Show Step Details" box. See if there is any clue as to the job failing and the server crashing.

Next check the Windows Appplication and System event logs. See if there is anything in there that may give a clue.

Of course, if SQL Server is causing the server to crash, and thus causing SQL Server to fail, I am sure there will be a SQL Server Dump file created that can be used to look further into the issue. Of course when we get to this level, Microsoft may be the folks to call and work with. They have a couple of utilities that pull all the dump, log and info files they need to have sent to them to work an issue.

Good Luck!

Thanks
