Is there a way to view the contents of a backup file without restoring to the server? I want to look back at an old backup from 2 months ago and see how something specific was configured. Any ideas? Thanks!

(I'm talking about .tar.gz files)

Load it up on a lab CM and go from there.

The xln database you'd want to see configuration from isn't exactly human readable anyway unless you worked for Avaya and know how it's setup.

I appreciate the suggestion, but not everyone has a lab CM.

It's a quick VMWare image - it's never been easier!

It's not like you need a gateway and licenses and need to get phones up. If you just wanted to list stations and display stuff, loading the VM up would be a piece of cake.

Where can I find the ova file?

support.avaya.com, it's available for download from PLDS if you've got a single sign on with access to that stuff.

what specific information in what type of backup file are you looking for? (CM translation, server config?)
There are many backup files and this is very complicated doing full system backups because the files have backup data from
many places. Backup and restore on CM6 does not work the way cm5 and earlier backups worked.

Specifically, I had a SIP trunk between my CM6 and an IP Office 9 system. The trunk was removed, and I want to put it back. Can't seem to get it working again.

You would need the xln1 files from before the trunks were removed. You could do restore or reload to your production server or lab server. Someone with a lab server could do that for you, with your xln backups.

All I see in my backups folder is the .tar.gz files, tho. I remember xln files before we upgraded from CM2.2 to CM6.3, but those wouldn't be helpful.

@84Mike, this was a month ago, not sure if you got it figured out?

If you unpack the .tar.gz backup file, you'll find the xln1 file. Here's an example of what I have.

[pre]$ tar -tzvf xln_cm1_011002_20160713.tar.gz
-rwxr--r-- root/root 6180864 2016-07-13 01:10:11 ./etc/opt/defty/xln1
-rwxr--r-- root/root 6180864 2016-07-13 01:10:11 ./etc/opt/defty/xln2
-rw-r--r-- root/root 7 2016-07-13 01:10:02 ./etc/opt/ecs/backup/serverBTMConfigSettings
-rw-r--r-- root/root 1244 2016-07-13 01:10:02 ./etc/opt/ecs/backup/xln_011002_20160713.info[/pre]

Any Linux machine will have the tar/g(un)zip utilities to unpack the backup file. Alternatively if you're a Windows user, you can install the Cygwin environment to get a Linux-like shell environment with more-or-less the same utilities available.

Or if Windows just use 7zip (free download) to unpack the gunzipped tarball. It supports both formats.
