I know that client serial port redirection is NOT available on Win2k Server and it IS available on Win2k3 Server. However we are NOT moving to w2k3 and we NEED this functionality for ONE DEVICE! Of course it should be inexpensive or free if possible...

Currently I am looking at serial port server hardware as a solution but I was hoping for some nice freeware or some other workaround.

Any suggestions?

TIA!

Mapleleaf,

Thanks for the tip! I'm checking out the software on their website and it LOOKS like it's really specifically for MODEMS. Do you happen to know if it'll work for OTHER RS-232 devices? I have a barecode reader that needs to communicate with a remote server on COM1 of the server. Basically I want COM1 on the workstation to act as though it's COM1 on the remote server.

Any thoughts?

RoundAbout,

Who made the BarCode reader and is it DOS or Windows based ??

I think that this product that creates a virtual serial cable using TCP/IP is what you need.

Best of all, you can get a 30 day free trial. After that, it's $395 or less if you ask

I worked with DOS based HandHelds for 13 years, so if you need help just ask

Ian,

It's a Windows-based system and a Symbol 6800 reader w/serial cradle.

Serial/IP looks like it might work for us. I'm going to play with it today or tomorrow.

One question though: They keep talking about "the serial server" in the documentation. Are they talking strictly about a hardware Serial Port Server or can a Windows 2000 Server act as the Serial Server?

Do you have any other suggestions for software or hardware to do what I need to do? Least-cost options are always prefered around here...

Thanks for your help!

Greg,

I'm assuming that you have a Symbol PDT6800 along with either a 38/6860 or 6865 or 6866 cradle.

Who wrote the Windows software ??. Is it a Symbol product, 3rd party or written in-house ??.

The Symbol docs make reference to a DOS based program that communicates directly with the COM port (just like Norand), so the next question is what does the Windows program load.

Since COM ports are not directly addressable under Windows, there has to be a device driver loaded like SERIAL.SYS. If you are lucky it may emulate a modem.
