Serial Port Prob

Hi, I have a relatively new XP pro laptop, a hp compaq Nx9005 WITH a serial port of the back. Problem is when I try and configure some equipment here it doesn't work. When I try the same software and the same equipment on an old win98 pc it works fine. Any ideas? The software i'm using is definatley winxp compatible. It seems as though xp isn't allowing the serial port to work? Any suggestions please.

Is the serial port listed correctly in Device Manager? Are the Properties set the same as the working machine?

Check the BIOS to see if the serial port is disabled.
