Serial mouse extension vs RS-232 cable?

I just tried plugging a 9-pin m/f cable between my UPS communication port and a server's serial port. The UPS immediately shut down. Could there be any difference between a serial mouse extension 9-pin cable and an RS-232 serial communication cable? Or would it just be that the UPS didn't like suddenly seeing the server communication (which I haven't had a problem with before, but there's a first time for everything...)

Usually a RS-232 cable for communications is for modems. A mouse extension cable will be wired "straight-through". What cable does the UPS require? Most I've seen lately are USB or USB-RJ45.

I had the same thing happen to me. If you have an APC UPS they provide a special cable and I never fussed with trying to make a standard cable work. I did find this site which gives some wiring info:

Ususally communications will cross the receive and transmit but I'm not sure about the UPS cable. And there are some handshaking differences too.
Since you had a comm cable before, try extending it with the extension. That should keep the connections correct. Ed Fair
