Sendmail error 553

I have a host whose IP/hostname is defined in /etc/hosts but not in the local network DNS. when trying to send mail thru local sendmail to the central mail server it bounces back like so

From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <MAILER-DAEMON@2host.host.com>
To: root@2host.host.com
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
user@host.com
(reason: 553 5.1.8 <root@2host.host.com>... Domain of sender
address root@2host.host.com does not exist)

nslookup from the localhost seems to confirm this:

# nslookup -sil 186.0.0.27
Server: 186.0.0.14
Address: 186.0.0.14#53

** server can't find 27.0.0.186.in-addr.arpa: NXDOMAIN

but if i telnet to the mail server it seems to resolve me! Maybe using a different DNS server?

adding the 2host.host.com to the external DNS is not an option in this case. I'm just wondering if something was forgotten in sendmail's configuration

What does 'dig host2.host.com' give?

host2.host.com isn't listed. I think host2 is going to have to be added to DNS. It looks like the original problem was that a script was sending the mail, but not appending the domain name when performing a 'MAIL FROM'. I got that using tcpdump.
So I used telnet to the mail server to send mail, but if I do 'MAIL FROM: user@host2.host.com' it still rejects it as a non-existent domain. Oh well

Add the host to your /etc/hosts file.

the host is in the hosts file, the destination smtp server is definitely rejecting host2 due to failing to resolve a reverse dns lookup.
