Sending a String to a URL

I have an app that I want to periodically send strings to a web server with and have no Idea where to start. I I have been dabbling with VB.net but do not have handle on it just yet. Being a veteran ASP programmer, my first incination is to send the sring as part of the querystring but I'm sure there must be a slicker way to do it. I would appreciate any shove in the right direction.
