I want to send emails from Outlook through our business server to an ISP dial up account. It doesn't work.

I try to manage a LAN of 30 PC's running w2k / office2k all connected to our central server running Small Business Server 2000.

Everyone uses Outlook for internal emails.

Currently External emails are forwarded to one user who dials out using a 56k modem on their machine to pop3 isp account to send/receive emails.
This machine has connection to ISP configured under network / dial up connections and in outlook has a service set up to use external e mail. This works fine.

However I want to dial up the pop3 account via our business server that has an ISDN adaptor rather than through the single machine.

I have configured a dial up on our business server to the ISP. OK.
I can ping to the ISP servers from our business server and my pc.

I have established a service within my pc / Outlook for external email but dial up through LAN rather than phone line. However I get the error message

'The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by your mail server....'

I'm assuming the mail server is our business server.

Normal internet access through our business server is fine.

Any ideas or white papers or how to docs or any help ??

Driving me mad.

So what mail server do you run on the SBS 2K server? Is your mail client sending to the SBS server or the ISP's SMTP server?

Presuming that you are running some king of mail server on the SBS box then you need to configure that to send outgoing mail either via direct DNS resolution or via your ISP's SMTP server as a 'smart host'.

Chris.

The SBS Server uses exchange.
I am struggling to understand how it fits toether however still trying.
From reading an article I have used the DNS Management Console and just added the ip addresses of my ISP servers
to the list of forwarders but still no luck.

These IP addresses were obtained by pinging to both mail.globalnet.co.uk and smtpmail.globalnet.co.uk

What combination of dial up / forwarding do I need ?

The SBS server has a dial up configured for Globalnet. This works via ISDN connection.

Thanks for anticipated help !!

Have you checked your Exchange logs to see the incoming connection from your mail client and attempted outgoing connection.

Oh, and putting your ISP's mail servers in the DNS management console won't do you much good. This is for when you are running a DNS server and you need to forward DNS request to another DNS server. I don't suppose that globalnet will want DNS requests being sent to their mail servers.

I suggest that you get someone in to configure Exchange for you if you really are not sure how to set it up.

Chris.

Thanks for all your help. I have solved the problem. Within Small Business Server there is an Internet Connection Wizard that allows you to configure SMTP and POP3 mail. It's not very clear and tucked away but it worked.

Its frustrating because you can also configure email/internet connections in Outlook and Exchange.

Anyway thanks.
