segmentation fault while restting the root

I am getting segmentation fault while restting the root password.

# passwd root
New Password:
Re-enter new Password:
Segmentation Fault

Here is the oupput of uname -a

SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-49 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4


can somebody please help me ?

Do the root entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow look valid?

Are you using NIS or anything like that?
