Security privilege checking - how?

ok I want to check whether a user has access to a file on a network share. I have tried using impersonate and seeing if the file exists but that always says the file exists which is a little annoying but hey. How can I do this? The application itself is a search page with the generalisation which of course is displaying no matter what. The file cannot be opened by the user either directly or by the web site but the generalisation still appears
