I have a situation where users option to shut down was removed from the drop down list. I checked the users rights and found that the group “Power users” was missing from the "shut down the system" policy setting and it listed "Administrators, Backup Operators, and *s-1-5-32-548" and a couple of other numbers. What are these numbers and why did the power user group suddenly disappear? When I added the group back it all seemed to work although I still have the number listed.

thanks

The Shutdown option disapeared on the W2K pro machine, but the policy is a group policy on W2K Server and that is where the "Power User" group was aparently replaced by the number.

It sounds like some change was made to the server and the numbers are the placeholder for the power user group.

You should be able to just add the power user's group back in. Check your event log to see what happened.

The numbers usualy mean something happened to the group name, the domain, or the machine to cause it not to recogize that group any more, so it shows that there was something there but that it cannot give it a user friendly name anymore because that group doesn't exist.

If the power user's group was deleted (or the server upgraded or changed) then the the power user group readded it will show those numbers...

Hope this helps. CJ

There is no longer a global security group called "Power Users" in AD anymore. The "Power Users" group only exists locally on you W2k Pro. boxes. The s-1-5-32-548 SID is for "Account Operators". What you can use instead of "Power Users" is "Authenticated Users."
