Guys,

I've got and upgrade from MCD4.0 to MiVoice7.1 which last time took about 2 hours to complete, most of the time with the switch off.

Question is can I take the dongle out of the 3300 whilst its running, (done it before) and then do the upgrade on a spare chassis, (which has been ordered for the job) without coming to any serious grief. I've ran a 3300 on test bench for days without any dongle but without any traffic on it.

Anybody any idea if that will cause me any issues as I dont want the same downtime again.

Have you migrated the DB to RDN mode?

If so, I would choose the online upgrade mode to reduce downtime.

With Online Upgrade, the system will upload the new SW to the inactive partition and prepare for upgrade.

The SW can be uploaded during working hours on the running server. Allow a bit more time for this than usual.

The required reboot can then be scheduled for a convenient time.

The actual downtime is less than 30 minutes once the reboot initiates

If anything goes wrong it will either come up on the original Partition or you can initiate the Swap command to revert to the original partition.

This is now my first choice for upgrades as it has proven to be at least as reliable as the offline upgrade.

Just done my first online (albeit from a 4.2 to the latest and greatest 4.2 and it seemed quicker thatn the last offline one I did which was a 7.0 to 7.1.

Kwbmitel,

When doing an online upgrade it seems give 30 mins (configurable) to load the software before it backs up the database, and then it asks if your want to reboot and load from the new software if I remember rightly. Can I at that point quit from the software installer and schedule a reboot for later time? Or do I have to leave myself connected, this is where it gets a bit grey to me.

Cheers

Steve

There are several options including the option to leave the program and reconnect later.

I usually start the upload an hour or more before the scheduled downtime and then configure the system to proceed with the upgrade at a specified time.

I almost always supervise, but I've tried the unsupervised method as well and so far, everything has gone according to plan.
