New installation of XP Pro. Can't start security centre or Firewall/ICS services. Get "Error 1075 - The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."

I have checked the following dependencies are started:
Application Layer Gateway Service
Windows Management Service

Have tried a few other things, unsuccessfully
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Any help appreciated.

Daniel.

This articles will give you a clue as to where I am coming from.

DHCP Client Initializes Improperly and Causes an Invalid IP Address

You receive a "System error 1075 has occurred" error message when you try to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service

FOR YOUR PARTICULAR PROBLEM use this information and see if you can apply or use it.

Service Names -

wscsvc = Security Center
SharedAccess = Windows Firewall

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ENTER THE SERVICE NAME HERE

DependOnService is a value.

Check or edit the value to delete incorrect items from the dependency list and see if you can start the services?

I see where you are going.

Thanks linney I'll check it out.

No go.

Going to try a repair reinstallation, I think it may be simpler than spending any more time on this.

Daniel.

I muscled through this same issue. Seems to happen when you uninstall Norton. The keys for Norton remain as Dependencies for the Security Center. [This also cleared up the networking problems]

Here's what worked for me:
1. Open regedit
2. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess
3. Delete the entry for the DependOnService
4. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc
5. Delete the entry for the DependOnService
6. Close out regedit and Restart

Hope that helps...
