Hi All
I'm having a problem with one of my PC's. It is currently running Windows 98 SE.

The power supply of this unit was damaged during some electrical problems that occurred on site. After I replaced the power supply, the device manager did not recognize the CD Rom. So, I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows. However, the Device Manager still fails to recognize the CD Rom. The Secondary IDE controller is showing that it is not working properly. I have updated the drivers and the same thing is still happening. I have also updated the system with a Intel Chipset utility.

Any Ideas
Regards
Dave

First of all, does the BIOS recognize the CDROM during POST? If so, it's a Windows problem like you suspected. You'll want to right-click My Computer, choose properties, and take a close look at Device Manager and Performance. Make sure you don't see any flags (X or !) and nothing says "MS-DOS Compatibility". Then post back. If the BIOS can't see it either, then read on...

Do you have other devices on the Primary IDE controller? If not, try the CDROM with the hard drive and see if it's recognized. Does the power light come on? It's quite possible the CDROM is damaged. Let us know what you find...
