Yes it is.
You can disable the built-in device through the BIOS (usually), or Device Manager (always).
The board is fairly complicated, so spend some time at the Creative Web site ahead of time to make sure you are cuurent on all drivers and other information you might need.

It is worth a day before starting the project to read and do some research of the experiences of other users. This is decidedly not a simple board to install correctly. but a worthy and good challenge for your son.
