Can anyone recommend a process or software which will allow me to create a search engine for a site that is mostly dynamic (databases driven by Cold Fusion and ODBC), but also can handle static pages and even documents uploaded by the customer (Word, PDF, etc)?

Of course, the search needs to tie into Cold Fusion so I have some control over the output, which fields in the database get displayed, etc.

You will love ColdFusion, since it has a built-in search-engine, Verity. Verity can search html, cfml, pdf, doc, xls and many more more files.
Try it out by opening a new file in CF Studio, click the CFML tab, and choose Verity Wizard. This will guide you through a few simple steps to set up your own search engine. Minor disadvantage is that Verity collections (indexed data) shouldn't be larger than about 100MB (or less, this depends on your server).
Try it, if you can't figure it out post again. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I have been working in CF 3.0 which had very limited Verity stuff for databases. Looks like the new version is exactly what I need.
