I right clicked on a folder to search it and there was no search option. Anyone know how to get it back?

Hi

If you are looking at the folder in Windows Explorer the search function is always in the upper right corner of the window.

Make sure the folder or drive you want to search is selected then type in the search term in the box. The search will start on it's own.

I'm a little confused myself about how you search a folder that is on the desk top.

I can't seem to find anyway to do it.

Hi

I checked out that link, but didn't find a way to add the search function to the drop down menu. If it is there maybe someone could point it out to me.

Did you try these options that were mentioned in that link?

OPTION ONE:
Through a Download

1. To Remove the Search Context Menu Item -
A) Click on the download button below to download the Remove_ContextMenu_Search.reg file.
B) Go to step 3.

2. To Restore the Search Context Menu Item -
A) Click on the download button below to download the Restore_ContextMenu_Search.reg file.

OPTION TWO:
The Manual Way

7. To Restore the Search Context Menu Item -
A) In the right pane, right click on LegacyDisable and click Delete. (See screenshots below steps 4, 5, or 6)
B) Click Yes to confirm deletion.
C) The registry will now look like similar to this. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This example is from step 4. Just substitute either step 4, 5, or 6 for the one you selected instead.

D) Go to step 9.

You have to be on the linked site for those quoted instructions to make any sense.

How to Restore the Search Context Menu Item after Installing the Vista SP1

Hi

I don't think I was reading the right thing.
I'll try again.

Remember that is a Vista tweak, so it might not work in Windows 7, but there is a good chance that it will.

Create a System restore point before you try it, just in case, so you can undo it.

Hi

When I tried to use the Download method I got a "Don't know how to open this file" message once it was downloaded.

When I tried the manual method I ran search in Registry Editor for the key indicated and I got a nothing found message.

So I'm guessing that this works different in Windows 7.

Anyway I did figure out how to search desktop folders. Duh!

You click on Desktop in Windows Explorer, select the folder, and then type the search into the search window in the upper right corner.

Don't know why I didn't realize this right away.

I took it that you were trying to get Search on the Context Menu but if you have solved your problem then all is well and good.

For information when you download a .reg file there is no install, you just right-click on it and take the "Merge" option to load the .reg file into the Registry. When manually adjusting the Registry it is also sometimes necessary to create a Key, and, or Value, and Data Value, where none exist.

Hi Again!

I got it to work.
I went back and tried again to do it manually and this time I was able to find the location by looking for it directly.

I don't know why it wouldn't show up when I ran search.

I removed the LegacyDisable key and now I have search in the drop down menu.

So that answers the question of whether it works the same in Windows 7.

Thanks for the help.
