I don't know why, because I didn't recently install any programs, but when I press search in the start menu of Windows XP home it sits there for a little bit, frozen, then resumes and does not open the search window. Any suggestions would be appreciated, because it would be really nice to be able to find some files!

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

Hi,
I have the same problem. I tried the tip given by bcastner but still the problem is there. Any suggestions
Thanks

quershi,

See the notes by myself, linney and others in this thread: thread779-758149

If no joy after trying the multiple repairs offered, do a Start, Run, scf /Scannow and have your XP CD handy.

to help you, see if System Restore to a point when Search worked does the trick.

Hello qureshi,

Could you do this one for (my/our) information sake?

Make a text file with the only line:
Code:
createobject("shell.application").findfiles
and name the file some, say, findfiles.vbs.

Then double-click it to run. Does the search window pop up? or nothing happen?

I've been browsing around the site with no positive results about the disappearing search function.

(Mine doesn't work, when I press "Search" button, the "Start" button pushes itself, freezes for about 30 seconds and then return control to computer)

Tsuji: I did what you suggested in your last post, with no results.

Any ideas????

thank you all!!!!!!!!!!!! (seems like the Search program is screwed up)

rmiron,

In case of virus problems you should run through this FAQ.

If nothing else works for you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

linney:
Thanks for your response. I installed Adaware and Spybot, and yes, there was a lot of programs installed (or at least, they were detected) and cleaned. However the problem still is there. I'm not much of the idea of the windows re-installing, you know, you spend your whole life trying to tune your pc up, so, that would take a considerable amount of weeks (we have to work, you know).

Two things:

1. If I use search from the windows explorer, the search window pops up and everything goes fine.

2. If I turn to safe mode, the search function is available from the Start Menu and everything goes fine.

Thank you

Open notepad as fix_search.reg and copy the below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{e17d4fc0-5564-11d1-83f2-00a0c90dc849}]
@="Search Results Folder"

Save the file and double-click to merge with the registry.

How does Search go for another user in Normal Mode?

linney:

I do not understand you question. I DO am able to Search from within Windows Explorer. By now, that's the only way I have to do searches. :)

Sorry, I was suggesting you try a different user to the one you normally log on with. This would check to see if your user profile was corrupted and causing the Start menu search to fail.

If you don't wish to create another user (or don't have one created) you could log on as Administrator in Normal Mode (non Safe Mode) and see if he can use Search correctly.

Ok. Now I understand. The search function does NOT work with other users.

The search function DOES WORK in safe mode.

:)

Run through these FAQ's again and post the Hi-Jack This log, It does sound like you have some remnants of Spyware or Adware still left on your machine.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Thank you linney.

Well. It's done. Finally. I deleted the suspicious registry entries mentioned by bcastnet, and.... :)

Thank you all for your support.
