Search Field in a site

Hello,
Are you referring to Windows SharePoint Services sites? WSS uses a much more simple search than the Portal, so you do not have any out-of-the-box configuration possibilities in a WSS search.
If the WSS site is connected to a portal (or you chose to index it) you can do searches from the Portal and get the hits off the WSS site.
WSS uses full-text search in SQL, while SPS as you know have the possibilities to index and crawl on a much more advanced level.

I didn't know WSS could do that too, I will have to check that out. The main thing I am trying to do is to be able to take that area where you would type in a search and place it in another area or site. I was thinking web parts would work, but then comes the second issue. We use a proxy that we need to authenticate with first and I have not found any settings for that. I found the proxy configuration, just not a way to enter a password for it.
Crawling is a feature I need, because we are testing SharePoint to be able to index a shared folder on a daily basis for our techs to do searches each other documents.

Hello,
Have you checked the central administration pages? There are som settings there for Proxies, not sure if it will help you out though, but it you do have the possibility to configure the use of a proxy server.
When it comes to the search. Even if you browse to a specifc Area in the portal you always have the Search possibilites listed. You can setup specific content sources if you want to narrow down the search to a specific area and only get hits on it.
If you have a WSS site (connected to the portal) and you do a search from it, it will only search the specific WSS site you are at, but if it is connected to a portal you will have a link in the search results page which will allow you to search for the same word in a portal search.
We have been working alot with the search, indexing and crawling here to make our search to be as good as possible and there are a lot of things you can configure and finetune to get it to suit your needs.

I did try using the proxy settings in the admin page, but it doesn't provide a spot for a user name and password. This seems to be a common problem from the reading on the internet I've done, but now solutions that I can find.
As far as the search function, I've been able to get it to work, it is really cool. The thing I am struggling with is adding the ability to perform the search from a site.
Let's say that I am in HR and I want to go to my HR site that doesn't have the view of all the other departments or portals. I'm looking for a way to put in a search field on the HR site and not be limited to only having this ability on the main portal site.
I hope this makes sense, I can email a screen shot of what I am talking about if it doesn't.
Feel free to ramble on, I would rather get a detailed answer then a general one.

The way we have done is that our portal "home page" is open to all our users. So if for example our HR want to search "outside" of their SharePoint services site, they can execute the query from the portal.
WSS does not have any good search capabilities and you can only search within the site you are executing the search from. I do not think you can get an more advanced search in WSS without coding/programming or getting a 3rd party software/webpart. WSS uses a full-text catalog in SQL for searching, while the Portal actually crawls and index whatever content you like, so with WSS you are very limited.
The search from the Portal only display results that the user executing the query has results on. So that is why we set our portal up so that anyone can go to the portal home page and from there execute searches, and then get results from content (and WSS sites) the user have access to.
