My question is that I have a Seagate UDMA 100 5400 RPM Hard Drive and have been reading in forums that you have to trigger the 100 MB burst mode on ATA 100 drives with special software. Is this the usual case? I've found software like that on the Seagate site that has to be run in DOS mode. My motherboard supports ATA 100 (Microstar 6330). Is this a wise move or leave it alone?

Never heard about this software but hey that don't mean it's not true!
I suspect what you are talking about are some necessary board driver upgrades on older boards not supporting UDMA100?? only guessing.
By the way I have a Seagate Barracuda IV UDMA 100 7,200rpm
I did not have to install any hard drive software with windows XP or 98SE/ME it posts as ATA100 Drive on Boot.

For it to work the drive, mobo, and cable have to support the flavor or UDMA you are attempting to run. Also, if you are using Win 98 then you have to check the DMA box in the properties for the drive under device manager. You may want to check that out as it leads to noticable perfomance gains. Otherwise, if all that is done you don't need anything else and it will run at the desired speed. It's definitely a wise move to use all the speed available, but don't expect it to perform anywhere near 100 on a benchmark.
