SCSI Harddrive replacement question

I have an HP Netserver with 3 36GB drives in RAID 5 config. One of the drives has failed and I am currently awaiting the replacement. Is there a website, or can someone tell me the exact steps I need to take to get it recognized and synchronized with the other two drives?

Your HP server should have come with an Array Manager.

Typically you just add the drive and click the array and choose rebuild array.

I don't need to do anything in the SCSI utility during bootup before windows loads?

Not if you are replacing the drive with one that is the same (including scsi ID).

nope - just take the old drive out and put the new one in
it will do it automatically

DONT turn it off to do it - it's designed to do it online and is indeed safer to do it online

the id's of the drives dont matter - they are hot swaps - the backplane is where the scsi's are derived from - just pop the drive back in the same bay

These are internal drives, not hot swaps.

What if an array manager isn't installed already. Can I install it now? Should I install it before I plug in the new drive?

Do you know if the RAID setup was configured within Windows 2000? Look under Disk Management in Administrative Tools. If I remember right a RAID5 configuration will show up as bright green. If there is no RAID setup in Disk Management then you already have an array controller installed and running (those are the only two ways I know of to get a RAID5 setup). I don't have any experience with HP Netservers, but you'll probably need to replace the drive, then run some type of update utility for the array controller to have it initialize the drive and add it to the array.

This is an older server, older than my term here, so I am assuming that it was configured at the standard SCSI utility on bootup. I think the drives are slowly dying because we went through this 6 months ago, when it was still under warranty, and HP walked me through the steps to initialize the new drive. Now, they will not talk to me and I did not document the clicks during the first troubleshooting exercise. I was just hoping that maybe someone had to do this more often than I and maybe remembered off the top of there head what needed to be done. Most of my experience is with Dell servers and hot swap drives. I am not much liking the internal drives right now.

ok where do we start? look in the device managers proerties and see what the scsi card is first. Also look in the program files and see if there is any scsi apps relating to it, probabaly not.

I would suggest on boot up watch the screen for any instructions like alt-xx for scsi configuration. It could be anything with the current into.

chances are its a key stoke on boot up and a utility on the scsi cards rom, and can only be done on a boot.
