Is it possible to write a script to change a computer's name in XP PRO?

Great code! Glad to see someone else that embrases VBScripting. I am having a hard time convincing my corprate office that VB rocks... Even though I get more done in less time than they do using my scripts ... oh well.

My question is what is wrong with sysprep. I run it just before every ghost image I create. You can edit the sysprep.ini file to pretty much automate your installs except for domain access.

creiners,

Nothing wrong with sysprep. It's just that we've never used it and I don't really have the time to learn/experiment with an additional stage of disk image prep. Something along the lines of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

However, since joining this forum I've seen so many references to sysprep that I guess I'll have to find the time.

bcastner,

I used info on the site a while ago to create a slipstreamed XP SP1a CD. I'm amazed by the amount of knowledge on the site (I've used some of the registry tweaks) and toyed with the idea of creating a full-blown unattend CD but soon gave up when I realised how much time I was devoting to this experiment.

I read all the MS stuff about sysprep but still wasn't convinced that it added any functionality I didn't already have in 'Clone Changer' (except for generating a new SID) 'cos I just re-use a generic Ghost image that has everything in it except hardware drivers. I'd look at this differently if we used MS servers at work but we don't.

The site msfn.org is just incredible.

My own preference is to use Unattended Install and Sysprep, or RIS.

If I have a large number of identical boxes, particulary notebooks, I ghost an image. It has saved my butt.

And I wanted to extend a belated welcome to Tek-Tips. You have made an impressive contribution in a short period of time.

Welcome and thank you.

bcastner,

I feel like an idiot... I've only ever visited unattended.msfn.org and didn't realize about parent msfn.org. Thanks! (and for the welcome, too)
