I've noticed that when the screen saver is activated (i.e. just the normal "Windows XP" logo screen saver), the hard drive will periodically start going, sometimes for a minute or two. I can't seem to figure out exactly what Windows is doing. Any ideas? Probably some background indexing or maintenance service. Thanks.

See if this helps, XP can be quite busy at times during idle cycles: faq779-4518

I would tend to agree with your assumption. If it was just running for a minute or two, once every day, that might be the creation of a System Restore point while you are idle.
