Screen resolution resets at startup

I have several HP Compaq D330m computers running Windows XP Pro sp2 that will not keep the display settings I want (800x600) but will revert to 1024x768 when I reboot the computer. A logout does not affect the settings. I've tried the display settings and the default 'scheme' HP has in their desktop settings nothing sticks. Where do I need to make the change so it will stick?
