New to XML. Anyone know what actually enforces the schema datatypes? Is it handled by the validating parser, or is it enforced by the DTD from which all schemas derive?

The parser will validate that your document matches what the schema (XSD) says.

DTDs are not as good as XSDs, as they don't enforce datatypes -- they're pretty much only good for enforcing element order and presence. I highly recommend you use XSDs if you can.
