Does Microsoft's backup program in XP pro have the ability to schedule a backup that will right to a different filename each day of the week? When I try and create these jobs, the new one always seems to overwrite the last one.

You could use .bat or .cmd files, or scripting, to identify the day of the week and use replaceable parameters to change the backup store.

But, why not schedule 5-7 scheduled tasks, specifying a unique backup location? One runs on Monday, one runs on Tuesday, etc.

That was my intention, but everytime I went to create a new bks file it would erase the schedule of the old one. For example, I would create Monday's bks filed scheduled to run on monday and then when I created tuesdays bks file I would go back to monday's and notice that it was scheduled to run on tuesday.

. Create 4-7 .bat or .cmd files, each referencing a different .bks path and filename. (Create one or use your old one and copy it 5-7 times and rename them Monday.bat, Tuesday.bat, etc.

Edit with notepad, and change the .bks location to point to a folder you create with the following structure:

\BACKUPS
\Monday
\Tuesday
\Wednesday
...etc...

As each scheduled task is pointing to a unique day_of_week batch or command file; and each unique day_of_week batch or command file points to a .BKS folder location that is unique, there is no possibility of overwriting another day_of_week file.

The problem remains that the filename I want to create for my backup file gets changed for every bks file I create. I think this is a MS backup limitation. I want to have a backup file for each day of the week. This way I can always go as far back as 7 days in order to restore. If a problem is found three days after the problem began I could go back to that instamce in time and replace the problem file(s).

Post the Scheduled Task command line, or .bat or .cmd you are using. Open it in Notepad if a .bat or .cmd and copy/paste here, or just use copy if a Scheduled Task command line.

We in this Forum can sort this issue.
Just as a point of clarification:

. You want to use the same filename.BKS, but segregate the file store by day_of_week; or,

. You want a unique filename.BKS by day_of_week; or,

. You don't care, as long as there is a seperate file.BKS by day_of_week.

I found out that you can load a slection and go and schedule the job. This will let you create a unique filename for that day. Then load the same selection and beginn the process again, changing the backup name and filename.

That was exactly what I was attempting to suggest to you. "But, why not schedule 5-7 scheduled tasks, specifying a unique backup location? One runs on Monday, one runs on Tuesday, etc."

Good job.

Best wishes,
