we have two local user accounts on a windows 2000 pro pc. one is administrator account, the other has restricted user rights. i scheduled disk defrag to run once a month, as administrator. computer is always logged on with restricted profile, and doesn't run disk defrag. a look at event viewer shows it doesn't even try to run at specified time. a look at the scheduled task shows that the task could not start.

A limited user cannot defragment a hard drive. This is a job for Administrators.
Use the "RUNAS" feature in a small .bat or .cmd file and schedule that task.

No, you are not wrong. The built-in defragger of Win2k is an MMC snap-in and dfrgntfs.exe is therefore not directly callable. But there are several freeware utilities that are perfectly schedulable to make the necessary calls for you:
