We are trying to get a nightly backup to run on our Windows 2003 Server. We have is scheduled to run at 10 PM. I came in the next morning and nothing has happened, the backup up did not run and there are no error messages as to why it did not run. I am using the Backup program in Windows and am backing up on to a DLT tape. Any one have any idea of what might be going on? Thanks for you help in advance.

I don't know if this relates to your situation or not but we had a problem with a scheduled task that runs a batch file. I kept getting an 'access denied' error in the scheduled task logs.

It turned out the problem had to do with the creator of the job. It was created while logged on as the local admin but was set to use a domain account's credentials to perform the task. This seems to be a known problem from something I read so I recreated the job while logged on as a domain admin and that fixed my problem.

We're doing a disk to disk backup, no tape drive is involved so I'm afraid I can't give you any more info.

If I manually run the backup to the tape drive it does work. I did get the backup to run fine on Wednesday night. I tried running it agian last night and it did not run. I used the same steps to setup thursday's backup as I used to setup Wednesday's backup. I found an articel saying that everyone on the network needs to be logged off for a backup to run. Is this true? Any halp you could offer would be great.

OK, you first need to check the logs. IN the task scheduler applet, click advanced and check the logs for a night taht failed. The error codes and descriptions should help alot. THe most likely thing is that the priveleges being used to run the job. If you scheduled task user login does not have the correct privs, it will fail. You can also toy with it with the system account.

Are you using a batch file for the backup and scheduling it with task scheduler?

Also, what does the task scheduler job status say after it fails?

I am not using a batch file to run the backup. I am using the Backup program wizard in Windows 2003 Server to run the backup. Here is the error message that we are getting after the task is run.

"FRIDAY-FULL.job" (ntbackup.exe) 3/11/2005 10:13:00 PM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed; therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account information existed for the task.

The specific error is:
0x8004130f: No account information could be found in the Task Scheduler security database for the task indicated.

Thanks for your help.

I added the user that we log into the server to the task scheduler, under the secruity for the task and the backups are running fine now. Thanks for all of your help.
