I noticed in DNS yesterday that we have multiple entries for client machines...For example there are the same ip's for computer1, computer2 and computer3...The good thing is that computer1 and computer2 are no longer on the network so there is no conflict, but they were on the network at some point...I looked into DNS and the scaveng stale resource records was not checked, so it looks as if these old entries are never deleted...Is that right?

Do I need to set up each DNS server to "scavenge stale resources records" or just one and let it replicate? Do I also have to set it at the zone level? Is this not enabled by default? Thanks in advance for your help!

the scavenging is not enabled by default.

Do I need to set up each DNS server to "scavenge stale resources records" or just one and let it replicate?
*i tried setting it up on one DNS server and it never seemed to replicate the changes to the other one so i would say you need to set it up on all DNS servers and then the forward and reverse zones.

Do I also have to set it at the zone level?
*you need to turn on scavenging at the server level and for each zone you want to scavenge, ie forward and reverse zones.
hope this helps...

Thanks for the help! Should I just take the default times for the zone, lookups and servers?

it depends on how often the dhcp clients register/re-register. i set the scavenge to run once a day and left the intervals at the defaults of 7 days each. if you want to see when a [articular record will go bad start the DNS snap-in, click view and then advanced. then RC any record and choose properties. when ou turn this on the existing clients records will not reflect the value but when they re-register with DNS then of course the "born-on" date will show. hope this helps...
